Kelly Jo Mallicoat, 51, of Wickenburg went to Heaven on Jan. 13. Born on March 19, 1960 in Wickenburg, Kelly Jo graduated from Wickenburg High School and earned her registered nursing degree at Yavapai College. Kelly was preceded in death by her mother Jody Jo Mallicoat.
Kelly Jo started her nursing career at Wickenburg Community Hospital and discovered that she got too attached to her patients while being a nurse in her home town. She spent the last 28 years as an emergency room nurse in several hospitals in the Phoenix area. This enabled her to use her energy, knowledge and compassion saving lives.
Her love of helping those in medical need led Kelly to volunteer with International Health Services. For years she used her annual vacation and paid her own way to travel to Honduras, giving medical care to the people in the jungles and remote villages, often traveling under dangerous, primitive and scary conditions.
She excelled not only at saving lives but at feeding her co-workers and family with her delicious homemade goodies, including a very special Prickly Pear Jelly otherwise known as Kelly’s Kactus Jelly. Kelly Jo loved her animals, nephews, nieces and other relatives and will be greatly missed by all.
Instead of a funeral service, a memorial and potluck will be held this Friday (Jan. 20) at 3 p.m. in the Ramada at Coffinger Park in Wickenburg. Friends are encouraged to share their memories. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wickenburg Humane Society.
