Billy Crighton (Bill)
Billy "Bill" Thompson, 84, of Lewiston, and Yuma, Ariz., passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, in Yuma.
Bill was born April 24, 1927, to Elma and Clownie Thompson in Wallowa, Ore.
He was raised in the Wallowa area and attended school there. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 1944 and was stationed at Clearfield, Utah. His favorite time in the service was when he served on a tugboat at Mare Island, Calif. He worked as a cowboy in Wallowa and the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.
In 1962, he met and married Ione Scoggin. She passed in 1964. He married Marge Hayden in 1965 and together they combined a family of seven children and two years later added one more child to their large family. In 1971, they moved the family to Potlatch where he worked in the logging industry for 23 years. He retired in 1990 and wintered in Yuma.
He enjoyed gardening and was well-known for his green thumb, specializing in roses and tomatoes, which he shared generously.
Bill was preceded in death by two brothers Tom Thompson and Ike Thompson; a sister Julia Guntner; a son David Scoggin; and recently lost his daughter Jean Licari.
He is survived by his wife, Marge Thompson; sons John Hayden, Jeff Scoggin and Kim, Steve Hayden, and Gary Hayden and Karen; daughters, Carol Curtis and Bob, and Donna Humble; brothers, Joe Thompson and Susie, Harold Thompson and Corrine, and Ross Thompson and Fran; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held this summer.
