Dorothy Vernus Smith was born Jan. 24, 1914, to long-time area miners, Goldie and Raymond Briggs. Born and raised in Chloride (the Mineral Park area), she is the last remaining member of her family.
She attended Kingman schools and started working in the United States Post Office in 1939. After a career that spanned 45 years, she retired as Postmaster in 1984. For her many years of dedication to the Postal Service, she was awarded the Key to the City of Kingman at a ceremony on Dec. 16, 2011. She passed from this life while in Palm Desert, Calif., on Jan. 20, 2012, surrounded by her daughter and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, June Benson of Palm Desert; her grandchildren, Marty Benson, Donda Kay and Andy DeMaria; and her great-grandchildren, Deagan, Ainsley and Alora DeMaria.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by services at 10 on Saturday, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave.
