GOHR,
James Albert (Jim)
The White Mountain Independent,
Show Low, Arizona ~ 02/03/2012
James Albert (Jim) Gohr, 78, died Jan. 26, 2012, at his residence in Vernon. He was born Sept. 1, 1933, on the family farm in Door County, Wis.
Jim served his country in the United States Army from 1951-53. After leaving the service, Jim returned home to Algoma, Wis., and worked in commercial fishing on Lake Michigan with his uncle and also with Wisconsin Game and Fish to earn enough to explore Alaska. He lived in Alaska almost 40 years, working a stream guard, and then managing a salmon hatchery for 10 years during which he survived the earthquake and tsunami of 1964.
He spent 20 years working in the welding trade and after the death of his first wife, Maureen, he worked on a ferry of the Alaska Marine Highway. An avid fly fisherman and bird watcher, he spent time in the Bitterroot region of Montana and southern Arizona, where he met his wife, Jean. He grew to love the White Mountains of Arizona where he built a log home; but in his heart, Alaska was always home.
In recent years, his health had declined and his dependency on oxygen increased. But through it all, his love for his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his confidence in the eternal life his Savior had fully paid for helped him to rise above his daily struggles. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him and loved him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jean Paustian Gohr; stepson Paul (Ranae) Reed; brother Emil C. Gohr of Greenfield, Wis.; sister Dorothy Tashou; granddaughter Megan Reed; nephews: Tim (Aimee) Gohr, Matt (Muriel Cunningham) Gohr, and Brent Paustian; nieces Lea (Ron) Dunbar-Smith and Heather Randol; great-nieces and nephews: Jadyn Rose Gohr, Tonya (Jeff) Kloosterman, Noel (Justin) Moreni, Brandon Randol and Cheyanne Randol.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil Sr. and Edna Pagel Gohr; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Taylor, Pastor Chris Rathje officiated.
