Edith Macia
Edith A. Macia, 89, a former FBI undercover agent, died Wednesday at Yavapai Community Hospital after a lingering illness.
She was born on Sept. 17, 1884 in Leadville, Colo., had resided in Arizona for 88 years and in Prescott for 11.
She lived in Tombstone for 50 years where she was clerk in charge of tax collections for the county treasurer, and was post-mistress for eight years. She had attended the U of A in 1901.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1936 and in 1943 was asked to aid the FBI by joining a communist cell. She was assigned the task of uncovering the names of members and their activities. She continued this work until 1958 when she left Los Angeles. During this period she reported to the FBI twice monthly. Since 1953 she was active in anti-communist work making hundreds of speeches to church and political groups. She was honored many times for her work, including the presentation in 1955 of the George Washington Honor Medal of the Freedom Foundations" for her dedication to American principles" and donating her time to speech giving.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma Rockfellow, of Prescott, and Betty Newell, of Petersburg, Va; one son, Harry E.; of Los Angeles; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren.
Memorial services and cremation will be Saturday, 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal church.
