Katherine W. Born entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Jan. 21, 2012, from her home in Tucson. She was born Sept. 25, 1920, to Ethel Mary Shivers Woolwine and Maurice Woolwine in Phoenix, Ariz.
At age three months, she moved with her mother to live with her grandmother Sallie Shivers Fisher Goldwater and her husband Morris Goldwater in their home at 240 S. Cortez St., Prescott, Ariz. She attended Jefferson and Washington schools and then Prescott Junior-Senior High School until graduation in 1938. She spent the winter of 1938-39 at Occidental College in California. She was employed in Prescott by Robert Crable in his law office and in Dr. Swenson's dental office.
Katherine married Ralph M. Born in 1942 in New York City where daughter Betty Kristine was born. The family later moved to Pittsfield, Mass., where daughter Beverly and son Douglas James were born. In 1954, the family moved to Prescott, Ariz., and within a year moved to Tucson. The family attended Grace Episcopal Church. Later they helped establish St. Matthews Episcopal Church where she was active in women's organizations and taught Sunday school. From 1968 to 1985, she worked for the U.S. Probation and Parole Department. She continued learning and met many friends at the SAGE program.
She was predeceased by husband Ralph and daughter Beverly. Survivors include her son Doug Born; daughter Kris Holt; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and close family friends Arsenia, Phil and Jim.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, in the chapel of St. Melany's Byzantine, 1212 N. Sahuara Ave. (access off Bellevue) in Tucson, Ariz. The family suggests memorial donations to AZ Special Olympics or United Animal Friends.
