Florence McCauley
(April 2, 1918 - February 16, 2012)
Longtime Flagstaff resident Florence McCauley passed away on February 16th at the Olivia White Hospice Home. Florence was born April 2nd, 1918 in Parshall, North Dakota. She was a 1937 graduate of Parshall High School and 1940 graduate of nurses training at St. Josephs Hospital in Minot, North Dakota.
Drawn to the southwest by her love of Zane Grey novels Florence arrived in Flagstaff in the summer of 1941. She went to work for Dr. C.C. Creighton at the Mercy Hospital. She was a member of the US Army Nurse Corps in WWII. A member of the 9th Evacuation Hospital unit, she saw service in Italy, France and Germany.
She returned to Flagstaff in 1946, and married Herman Walter “Walt” McCauley. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her son Walter Frank McCauley.
She is survived by children, Mary (Fred) Stone of Chandler, Arizona, James (Clare) McCauley, of Flagstaff, Robert McCauley of Anchorage, Alaska, Ann (Tom) Baxter of Casa Grande, Arizona.
She is also survived by siblings Richard and Lambert Stanek and Mrs. Mabel Vomacka, all of Gregory South Dakota, as well as 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Florence retired from Flagstaff Medical Center after more then 25 years of service. She was affectionately known as “Mac” around the Flagstaff Hospital. She was also an accomplished seamstress and quilter. She has resided at the Peaks Assisted Living Facility for the last 3 years.
A funeral mass will be held at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel, Thursday February 23rd at 2:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Citizens Cemetery in the Family plot.
