James Scott Simpson was born March 27, 1933 in Prescott, Arizona to Kenneth Edward Simpson and Helen Scott Simpson.
He left this world February 29, 2012 doing one of the things he enjoyed, golfing. Scott was a Farrier educator, horseman, author, entertainer and was well known throughout the western United States living in both Arizona and Montana. He established farrier courses at Montana State University, Walla Walla State University and his own Northwest Horseshoeing School. He had also authored several farrier books and articles.
He was the type of person who was at ease in a crowd singing and playing the guitar or on his own with a horse. Scott began his horseshoeing career in the 1950s in California. He attended CalPoly University in San Luis Obispo, California. He began teaching at Montana State University in the early 1970s and left there in 1983 teaching at Walla Walla before establishing his own school. Scott lived in Montana in the summers and wintered in Wickenburg, Arizona where he felt quite at home with team roping and golfing.
He was vice-president of the American Farrier's Association for several years and was instrumental in organizing the AFA's Certification Program.
Scott is survived by children: Benjamin Simpson of Belgrade, MT and daughter Sally Simpson of Redding ,California.
