Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Published Saturday, April 21, 2012 - Charles (Buddy) Hughes 88, passed away March 14, 2012 in Lake Havasu City. He was a loved patient of the Havasu Nursing Center. Charles was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Charles Edwin Hughes Sr. and Otillia (Tillie) Brandt Hughes. He married his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Frances Char Hughes, March 25, 1955, on Oahu, Hawaii, where they resided for 26 years. They moved to Kula, Maui, Hawaii, in 1981 for 17 years of farming carnations, tuberose and protea. Charles was a graduate of Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1942. He was also a veteran of World War II and served in the Air Force. He worked for Pan American Airlines from 1941 to 1980 and retired as Manager of Aircraft Maintenance in Honolulu. Charles’ career spanned the China Clipper to the 747. During his time with Pan American Airlines, he was also a member of the Hawaii Power Boat Association and was an avid drag racer. Charles and Elizabeth retired to Lake Havasu City, 13 years ago so he could work on restoring his Omega 21” Cruiser. Charles is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hughes; sons, Keith Kelii Hughes, Charles Edwin Hughes III and Kenneth Kainoa Hughes; grandson, Daniel Kelii Hughes; niece, Dawn Marie Hughes; nephew, Jeffery Hughes. A memorial service will take place at Grace Episcopal Church Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with words of comfort by Father David Richardson.
