Ernest O. Silva, Jr. “Ernie” lived a life rich with family and friends. He was born in Phoenix and grew up on a citrus farm at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road.
At this time Ernie helped run his parents’ Silva Fruit Stand where they sold citrus, dates and pomegranates from their farm.
He attended North High School where he met Barbara, his wife of 61 years.
Ernie served in the United States Air Force where he nurtured his love of flying as a jet engine mechanic. After his term in the military, he managed all of the city of Phoenix’s Southwest Drive-In Theaters until 1964 when drive-ins were becoming a thing of the past.
He and Barbara then created a men’s and boy’s clothing store, the “Pants Shack.”
In 2001, Ernie and Barbara retired in Rimrock, AZ where Ernie revived his passion for flying by building and learning to fly a trike. With this he became known as “The Birdman” while circling hot air balloons and taking their picture.
He also purchased a Cessna plane, which he and Barbara used to enjoy seeing all of our beautiful state from the air.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, his daughters Terry and Dennice, his son Robert, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Bueler Funeral Home assisted the family.
