Victor Oxentenko
“The last of the good guys” died April 19. Victor Oxentenko was born Nov.13, 1921 near Kief, N.D., to Fyodorovich (Fred) and Irina (Irene) Oxentenko.
He was the youngest of six children and grew up on the family farm. He often talked of milking cows, riding his horse to the one-room school, and visiting the neighbors. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis.
Always industrious, he went to Kodiak, Alaska, to work as a carpenter. He was on his way to California when news came of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He wanted to serve his country, but the doctor felt he had a heart problem. He went to Hawaii as a civilian and helped rebuild the Pali. When he returned to North Dakota, he bought a restaurant in Fargo. It was there he met and married Alfreda Grande. He bought a hardware store in Sleepy Eye, Minn., later sold it and bought another one in Fairmont, Minn. In July of 1961, he and his family moved to Phoenix.
Victor was a successful agent for several insurance companies - Franklin Life, Alexander Hamilton, Jackson National, etc. He married Sharon Wells in 1988. They moved to Wickenburg in 2000.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Mike and George, his sisters Alma, Ella and Lena, and his son Charles.
He is survived by his wife Sharon of Wickenburg, his daughter Ellen (Michael) Newton of Phoenix, his daughter-in-law Linda Oxentenko of Laughlin, Nev., his son Paul Oxentenko of Scottsdale. He is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Adeline Oxentenko of Bismarck, N.D., and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Banner Alzheimer’s Residence in Peoria for their compassionate care. We also appreciate the end-of-life care he received from Hospice of the Valley. Per his request, there will be no funeral services.
Arrangements are by David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
