Heritage Funeral Chapel Peoria, Arizona Steven George Haines Died: April 28, 2012 Steven George Haines, BM2 USCG (Ret) was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on November 18, 1954 and left this life April 28th 2012 at age 57 after a prolonged illness due to complications from 30 years of quadriplegia. Steven was raised in Rapid City, South Dakota where he attended school and thereafter enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He proudly served 8 years in the Coast Guard and had just signed on for another 8 years when he was injured in a diving accident. Despite his physical handicap, Steve lived life to the fullest and felt blessed and fortunate for what he had. He was an inspiration to all who met him. Steve donated to countless charities over the years and always stepped up when anyone was in need. He provided life saving stem cells to his brother Mike who, thanks to Steve, is a healthy Leukemia survivor. Always selfless and ever devoted to family, Steven will be desperately missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his mother and father, John and Virginia Haines, brothers John (Lissa) and Mike (Vanessa), sisters Vickie (Bill), Joni (JB), and Tracy (Steve), nephews Justin, Jason, Dustin, Taylor and Jimmy, nieces Joni (Anthony), Melanie (Chad), and Jessica, great-niece Justine and great-nephews Logan and Riley. He is preceded in death by nephew Garrett Logan Haines. Thank you to his caretaker family David, Wanda, Lissa, Paul and Larry who loved Steve like a brother. He was always grateful to those at the Veterans Hospital who took such great care of him over the years and particularly provided such comfort at the end. Steven you now have legs to go with your angel wings so run with the wind, soar high and be at peace. Services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 9:30 AM with a viewing starting at 9:00AM at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria. Burial with full military honors will be held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Disabled American Veterans or The Wounded Warrior Project.
