DOMAN, Michael John (Mike)


Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Sunday, May 06, 2012 Dr. Michael John Doman (10/3/38-4/27/12) Dr. Michael J. Doman, aged 73, died at Flagstaff Medical Center on Friday, April 27, 2012 after a seven-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed. He was born on October 3, 1938, in Medina, NY to John and Ester Doman. When Mike was in 6th grade, his father retired from the Navy. The family was able to settle down in Camarillo, CA, where Mike and his sister grew up among citrus orchards, eucalyptus and avocado trees. He graduated from Oxnard Union High School in 1956. Mike was a second generation Polish-American, and the first person in his family to pursue higher education, focusing his studies in physics. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from University California Santa Barbara (1960), a Master of Science from (then) San Diego State College (1963), and a Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo (1968). Upon graduation, he taught physics at the Montana School of Mines in Butte, MT for three years, worked at Calspan Corporation in Buffalo, NY for five years and then in 1977, he joined the company that he would stay with for 35 years, currently known as National Security Technologies in Las Vegas, NV. His work often took him onto the Nevada Test Site. Mike and Pat married after college in 1961 at the (then) Unitarian Church of San Francisco. Last year in September, 2011, they celebrated their 50th anniversary together. They made their home in Boulder City, NV until 2005, when they relocated to Flagstaff, AZ. Mike, however, continued to commute to Las Vegas for work. Mike is survived by his wife Priscilla (Pat), his two daughters Lorraine Doman-Sheydayi (Alexei) of Gilbert, AZ and Jennifer Kourik (Gregory) of Las Vegas, NV and four grandchildren – the delight of his life: Jena and Andrei Sheydayi (9), Kyla Hering (8) and Owen Kourik (4). He is also survived by his sister Margaret Taylor (Tony) of Boulder City, NV and two nephews, Lt. Col. Andy Taylor (Jennifer) of Las Cruses, NM and Todd Taylor (Mary-Clare) of Highland Park, CA. He has numerous cousins living in New York. His memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Flagstaff, 510 N.
