RENTHAL, James Stephan

Arizona Republic, Phoenix, AZ - Published on May 10, 2012 - Renthal, James Stephan Jim passed away May 6, 2012. He was born on April 5, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to Sid and Helen Renthal and was a proud graduate of the University of Chicago. After moving west, Jim attended the University of Arizona where he completed his Master's Degree in Soil Science. His career spanned 35 years as a passionate advocate for our precious western water resources in the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management where he worked in field offices in Arizona, Idaho and Oregon. During a recent 5 year assignment in Washington D.C., Jim contributed to an exhibit currently on display in the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History amongst his other vast responsibilities. Since returning to Arizona, he has spent the past 3 years basking in the glow of his 4-year-old grand-daughter playing made up games for hours on end. A veracious reader and deep thinker, his eclectic interests included a passion for sports, golf, handball and music while always making time for friends and loved ones. Jim's numerous charities include the Sierra Club Foundation and the University of Chicago. In many conversations with family and friends, he always stressed how important it was to make a difference and Jim strived for that his entire life. After retiring only 6 months ago, he was looking forward to continuing to make that difference and we believe he was lost to the world too soon. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Barbara, Son David, Brother Robert and numerous extended family members that cherished his presence. A celebration of his life and contributions will be held at the Zona Hotel Suites Scottsdale Pavilion on Friday, May 11. Arrangements are being made by Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary for any deliveries to the pavilion. Please visitwww.hansenmortuary.com to place online condolences.
