Fred N. Johnson passed away May 9, 2012 at his home at the age of 71, with his wife, Betty, son Luther, daughter Cindy and son-in-law, Chris Matranga, by his side. Fred was born in Meeker, Colo., on his grandfather’s ranch Sept. 3, 1940. His parents were Fred and Edna (Van Cleave) (Johnson) Stovall.
He joined the Navy in 1958 and met the love of his life, Betty McAlary, while on leave before going to his station in Hawaii. They were married June 5, 1961, in Hawaii. He spent 21 years in the Navy. He went through seven different campaigns during Vietnam including Operation End Sweep. He retired as a Chief Radioman. He then taught school for 16 years for San Diego Community College District. He moved to Lake Havasu City in November 1997. Here he worked for the Havasu Adult Books store, Johnson and Manley Lumber Yard and the London Bridge Course Golf Club.
He was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars. He organized and was also president of the American Legion Golf Club for a few years and then moved the league from there to the VFW and renamed the Rowdies Golf League which meant he met too many good people to mention. So to all my friends and family don’t mourn. Be like me and be thankful of the full life I have had with all of you.
Fred leaves behind his wife, Betty (McAlary); his son, Luther; daughter, Cindy Matranga (Chris); grandsons, Luther, Jr. (Erin), Nick, David (Courtney), Josh, Michael and Matthew.
