Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Published Thursday, May 10, 2012 - Wifredo Gomez, 89, passed away in Lake Havasu City May 7, 2012. He was born June 7, 1922, in Bayamo, Cuba, to Pedro and Candelaria Gomez. Wifredo married his wife, Bernabeza, in Cuba and together they immigrated to Elizabeth, N.J. in 1946, and became U.S. citizens. They lived in California for 17 years, where he worked for North American Rockwell as a mechanical engineer for the space program including projects of Gemini space capsule through the Apollo projects. After 14 years of service, he moved into the private sector of the retail business, beginning with Rockview Dairy as a franchisee, owned and operated two independent supermarkets (El Camaguey and La Bayamesa) and retired at the age of 55. Wifredo is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernabeza Gladys Gomez, of Lake Havasu City; sons, Wilfred R. (Gloria) Gomez and Dr. Richard (Kathy) Gomez; grandchildren, Jonathan (Kathleen), Danielle, Elizabeth and James.
