Edward A. "Ed" Althauser, age 86, a 31-year resident of Bullhead City, entered into rest on Sunday, May 27, 2012, in Bullhead City, Ariz.
He was born April 30, 1926, in New Albany, Ohio, to Charles and Florence Althauser.
PFC Althauser served in the U.S. Army's 35th Infantry Division, 137th Regiment, Company K. He was a Combat BAR rifleman, serving from August 12, 1944, to June 28, 1946. His service included a tour of duty in Germany as a replacement for soldiers lost in the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1981, Ed and Dee moved to Bullhead City after he retired from 25 years at the Union Oil Refinery in Wilmington, Calif.
Ed was married to Deloros "Dee" for 64 years and they were looking forward to celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on June 28, 2012.
He served as Commander of the American Legion Post 87 in Bullhead City, 2001-2002, currently was Vice Commander of the post, and Commander of the Honor Guard. He previously served as Finance Officer, Adjutant and 2nd Vice Commander. He also held the position of chaplain in American Legion's District 7.
Ed was very active with local veterans and in the community. He became known as the "flag man" for all of the flags he provided for various organizations and events.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Amanda and Scott DeGraffenreid and one great-grandchild, Janeen Ganahl.
He is survived by his wife, Deloros "Dee" Althauser of Bullhead City, Ariz; two daughters, Sharron (Marvin) Roll of Anaheim, Calif. and Wanda (Richard) DeGraffenreid of Escondido, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Desert Lawn Funeral Home, 9250 South Ranchero Lane, Mohave Valley, Ariz. Pastor Matthew Richardt will officiate.
The inurnment will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor at Desert Lawn Memorial Gardens officiated by the United Veterans Honor Guard.
