Blaine R. Butler, Ph.D., 86, Colonel, USAF (Ret), of Melbourne, Fla., died on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Blaine R. Butler of Johnstown, N.Y.
Blaine graduated from West Point in 1948, with flying training at Randolph Field and Barksdale AFB. Service included the Korean War (Operation Officer-98th Bomb Wing), flight instructor (B-29, B-47), Professor and Head, Dept of Aeronautics, USAF Academy; Vietnam War (5th Special Operations Squadron); and, duty with the Joint Strategic Integrated Planning Staff in Washington DC.
After retirement from the USAF, he was a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University and Professor and Head of the Dept of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., which he established and took through initial accreditation.
He is survived by his wife Ann Fullerton Butler of Melbourne, Fla.; three daughters, Sally Butler Stieghan, Laura Butler Wallace and Elizabeth Ann Curry; six grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Butler Chambers.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2012 at Prince of Peace Anglican Church in Melbourne, Fla.
