LOUGHEAD, Herold Vernon


Herold Vernon Loughead, 91, of Moraga, Calif., and formerly of Buckeye died July 26, 2008 in Walnut Creek, CA. Mr. Loughead was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Hazelton, Kansas. He moved to California with his family and was a member of the Future Farmers of America. He graduated from Chaffey Junior College and Oregon State College with a degree in entomology. He began his career as an extension agent in Madris, Ore. Later he was a 1st lieutenant in the Air Force and flew C47s at the beginning of the Korean conflict from Tokyo, Japan to South Korea. After leaving the Air Force, Mr. Loughead farmed in Madrid, Ore., until he moved to Arizona 1958. In 1959, he attended Michigan State University on a grant. He eventually became a livestock specialist for the Cooperative Extension Service in Maricopa County where he retired as a professor emeritus from University of Arizona in 1984. He taught agricultural education at Buckeye Union High School and Buckeye Academy. Mr. Loughead helped start the State 4-H Horse Show and sheep and swine shows at the Arizona National Livestock Show. He served as the swine superintendent for the Arizona State Fair and Arizona National Livestock Show for many years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Moraga and Seniors in Retirement. He is survived by his wife, Laurine; two sons, James and Scott of Gilbert; four daughters, Barbara Gouldstone of Reno, Nev., Lauri Lackey of Buckeye, Leigh Wilson of Yuma and Lisa Willard of Buckeye; two step-sons, Gary Hill of Modesto, Calif. and Jim Hill of Benecia, Calif.; sister, Maxine Howell of Fallbrook, Calif.; eleven grandchildren; three step-granchildren; three great-granchildren; and the mother of five of his children, Miriam Loughead of Buckeye. Services were held July 31 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lafayette, Calif. Donations may be made to the Herold V.
