Earl D. Davis, age 82, a 35-year resident of Barstow, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, in Barstow. He was born April 1, 1930, in Douglas, Kan.
Earl was a veteran of the US Army, serving in Korea during the Korean War as a locomotive engineer. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
After his military service, Earl went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 41 years.
Earl was a World War II historian and collector of many books on the subject. He also was a carpenter, and made many beautiful pieces of furniture.
Earl loved family gatherings and playing canasta. His most favorite thing was to dress as Santa Claus for his grandchildren and friends. Earl would take the gifts from the Santa bag, and Ethel always in her red dress, would pass out the gifts to the children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; parents. Myrtle and Karl Davis; two brothers, Karl Jake Davis, Jr., and John James Davis; and niece, Cheryl Elks.
Earl is survived by his six children, Sharon Weitz of Barstow, Calif., Peter (Pat) Weitz of Las Vegas, Nev., Steven (Della) Weitz of
Barstow, Calif., Marci (Craig) Kolburg of Ariz., Cynthia (Clarence) Sanchez of Barstow, Calif., and Anita Weitz of Wyo.; four sisters, Juanita Richardson of Needles, Calif., Wilma Million of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Velma Odden of Lapier, Mich., and Jodie Mejia of Rialto, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Earl will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow, Calif.
A Burial will be at a later date in Needles, Calif.
