Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Wednesday, June 13, 2012 Manuel G. Hernandez, 76, died June 6, 2012, in Flagstaff. He was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Holy Rosary will be Friday, June 22, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Norvel Owens Mortuary ~~~~~~ Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Sunday, June 17, 2012 Manuel G. Hernandez, 76, died June 6, 2012 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Manuel was born February 7, 1936, in Tijuana Baja California, Mexico to Manuel and Rosario Hernandez. In 1949, his Mother moved him and his sister Mary to Flagstaff, Arizona after the passing of their Father. He attended South Beaver Elementary, Flagstaff Junior High School and graduated from Flagstaff High School in 1958. In 1954, he joined the Arizona Army National Guard and proudly served for almost 40 years. He met many lifelong friends in the Guard who he remained friends with today. In 1992 his Flagstaff unit was almost deployed to the Gulf War in Iraq but were ultimately not deployed; however many of his friends did go to the Gulf. Manuel retired as a SSgt. in 1993. While serving in the National Guard, he also worked at Northern Arizona University for 31 years retiring in 1999. Manuel was a member of the Knight of Columbus Fraternal Organization. He enjoyed watching sports; attending local football and basketball games, in particular the NAU Lumberjacks and just talking about the love of the game. Manuel also enjoyed fishing and camping with family and friends. Manuel is survived by his son Randy (Lara) Hernandez, daughter Valerie Hernandez and Sister Mary Mieras, 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; Manuel Alarcon Hernandez and Rosario Garcia Hernandez; Half-Brother Antonio Lopez Hernandez and Half-Sister Maclovia Gutierrez. Holy Rosary will be Friday, June 22, 2012 at 09:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
