Peter J. Koeniger, 91, of Litchfield Park died June 20, 2012, at Hospice of the Valley in Goodyear.
Mr. Koeniger was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Mahlow, Germany. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1944 as an obstetrician. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II performing general surgery and in the U.S. occupation of Germany. He became the first obstetrician for the territory of Alaska in 1949. He married his second wife, Electra, in 1960. He moved to Aberdeen, Wash., in 1968. He retired in 1985 after delivering about 9,000 babies.
He kept two homes, one in Litchfield Park and the other in Sudden Valley, Wash., until 2005, when he became a full-time Arizona resident. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Avondale and Wigwam Country Club in Litchfield Park.
He is survived by three sons, Neil, Carl of Anchorage, Alaska, and Stephen of Palmer, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, and his wife of more than 50 years, Electra.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. today at Thompson's Valley West Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Road in Goodyear. Services will start with a rosary recital at 10 a.m. The Rev. Milford Suida will officiate. Interment will be in Aberdeen.
