Bill was born in Indianapolis Nov. 1, 1937, in the depths of the Great Depression. He began school in the city of his birth, moved to Denver, Colo., in 1945, and Kensington, Calif., adjacent to Berkeley and El Cerrito, in 1950. He graduated from El Cerrito High School in 1955.
After earning a master’s degree in statistics as U.C.B., Bill joined the Management Systems Development Division (MSDD) at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y. After two years at Kodak analytics techniques, he returned to U.C. Berkeley for his Ph.D. in statistics.
Returning to Kodak, Bill’s assumed a leadership position, first as group leader of the Mathematical Analysis Group and then on to Corporate Director of Business, serving on the company’s Corporate Quality Advisory Council. Retiring after 27 years with Eastman Kodak, Bill was named professor of marketing at the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester.
In 1995, leaving his professional career behind, he devoted himself to his father’s care in Lake Havasu City. Bill was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2399 in Lake Havasu City.
He is survived by one brother, Dr. Stephen B. (Ann) Lawton, of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephew, Jefferay Lawton; niece, Sarah Lawton; aunt, Vera Lawton, of Jackson, N.J.; and preceded in death by his parents, Burrell C. and Emma Loretta (McCord) Lawton.
Arrangements are under the care of Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Ind., 47043. Funeral to take place July 16, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m., interment will be at Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Ind.
Donations in Bill’s name may be made to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography & Film, or to the charity of donor’s choice, as well as flowers, are appreciated by the family.
