Vernice L. “Bud” Baccus, 83, passed away peacefully June 24, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Bud was born March 5, 1929, as the son of Marie and Jacob Baccus. He grew up in Metropolis, Ill., where he graduated from Metropolis High and was active in all types of varsity sports. Following high school, he served in the Marines before moving to California. In 1970, he married his second wife, Bonnie, who was the love of his life, as he was to her. Together they proudly raised six children from their previous marriages. They were married for 42 years. Bud had a successful career with Home Savings & Loan in Buena Park, Calif., for 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping and golf.
In retirement, Bud and Bonnie split their time between Lake Havasu City and Reedsport, Ore., while also motorhoming across the country. In his later years, with snow white hair and beard, Bud was the perfect picture of Santa Clause and he and Bonnie would travel all over the country for the holidays, bringing smiles to the faces of children and adults alike as Mr. and Mrs. Clause. Bud is survived by his wife, Bonnie, and her three children; his three natural daughters; a niece and nephew; and 12 grandchildren. Bud will be lovingly remembered for his big heart, warm smile and endearing personality.
