Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, Arizona Tuesday, July 24, 2012 Jane L. Frederick, age 93, died in Stockton, Calif. on June 10, 2012. Jane was born in Globe, Ariz. in 1918. She was the only child of Johnnie and WB Lewis. She graduated from Globe High School in 1936, following her grandmother and mother into the teaching profession which was her dream. She graduated from Arizona Teachers’ College (now ASU) in 1940. During World War II she taught elementary students at the Gila River Japanese internment camp in Arizona. In 1943 she married Francis S. Frederick and they moved to California. She started teaching for Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) in 1947. She taught full time while raising her four daughters (Patricia, Jo, Anne and Paula). She served on various boards and committees and earned her California Special Education Certificate in 1960. She helped shape the SUSD Special Education Program from 1961 until her first retirement in 1980 at age 62. She began her second career with SUSD as a Consultant for the Preschool Special Education Program. For the next 24 years she served as a liaison for that program with Head Start, Walton Developmental Center and Family Resource and Referral. In 1997 she was awarded the ABC Award by the Family Resource and Referral Center for her work with special needs toddlers. In June 2004 she retired for the second time at age 85; she received a special resolution by the Legislature of the State of California at that retirement event. In 1987 her Special Education co-workers nominated her for special recognition and the SUSD School Board agreed and renamed a school after her: The Jane L. Frederick Continuation High School. Jane was truly touched by this honor. She delighted in being the new face at the school. The culinary students named their café Jane’s Café. Jane was pleased to attend the graduating ceremonies over the years that followed. Her hobbies included traveling (China, British Isles, Arizona, New Mexico, Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Oregon); gardening, sewing and reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis S. Frederick; and her daughter, Paula Frederick. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia, Jo and Anne Frederick; and sons-in-law Claude Finn III and John Baker. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Jane Frederick High School, 1146 E. Weber Ave. Stockton, CA 95205. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charitable fund that was established by the family to pay for things that enhance the programs of the school.
