THURLOW, Ernest Emmanuel (Ernie)


The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona Wednesday, August 01, 2012 Ernest Emmanuel (Ernie) Thurlow was born Aug. 8, 1917 in Vale, S.D., He passed away Wednesday, July 25 in the Wickenburg Community Hospital. Ernie was raised in Rapid City, S.D., the seventh in a family of 10 children. After graduating from high school, he attended the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, earning a B.S. in geology in 1939. He attended the Montana School of Mines in Butte, Mont., on a fellowship and obtained his M.S. in geology in 1941. In 1942, Ernie married Rose Marie Howard in Butte, Mont. Early in his career he was employed by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and worked for three years in Chuquicamata, Chile. Subsequent employment with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission took Ernie and his family to many states across the country until 1958. For one year, he was the chief geologist for Marcona Mining Company in Lima, Peru, before becoming a geologist for the Northern Pacific Railway Company and residing with his family in St. Paul, Minn., for 14 years. Ernie and his wife lived in Billings, Mont., from 1973 to 1993, where he was assistant vice president for minerals and land with Burlington Northern Railroad. While living in Montana, they enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren at their summer home on Bitterroot Lake. The Thurlows retired to Wickenburg in 1993 and actively participated in St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Rose Marie and his son Howard Paul. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Audrey Thurlow of Bozeman, Mont., and Richard Thurlow and Anju Vaidya-Thurlow of Wilmington, Del.; daughter and son-in-law Jane Thurlow and Kevin Hartse of Spokane, Wash.; daughter-in-law Martha Thurlow of Little Canada, Minn.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Ernie will be remembered for his sense of humor, enduring faith, and ceasless optimism. A memorial service will take place at St. Alban’s at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wickenburg Community Hospital or St. Alban’s Church. Arrangements are under the direction of David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
