Betty Schumacker
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Betty Schumacker, 95, of Paulden, Ariz., at Hospice Family Care in Prescott, Ariz., on Aug. 19, 2012.
Betty was born May 3, 1917, in Scranton, Pa. She grew up in Michigan and Ohio and received her bachelor's degree at Adrian College, Michigan. She dedicated her life to teaching students English, speech, drama and biology. She especially loved poetry, writing many poems herself. Her other passions were reading, gardening, flowers and raising her children.
She had a special devotion to the Catholic Church, volunteering many hours to St. Vincent de Paul and St. Mary's Food Bank. A highlight of her life was a trip to Rome, Italy, to see Pope John Paul II beatify Frederic Ozanam, founder of St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was also a member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Mary's Church in Chandler, Ariz.
Betty is survived by her four children: daughters Therese Stonehart and husband Les Stonehart of Paulden, Ariz., and Ann Zufelt and husband Ron Zufelt of Phoenix, Ariz.; and sons Dave Schumacker and wife Barb Schumacker (deceased) of Ottawa, Ohio, and Tim Schumacker and wife Robin Schumacker of Findlay, Ohio; 11 wonderful grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Thank you to all our friends that have supported us through this difficult time.
A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at St. Catherine Labouré Church. Rosary will be at 9:35 before Mass.
The family suggests donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Betty's memory.
In celebration of her life, there will be an open house after Mass on Aug. 25, all day at the family home in Paulden. Call 928-308-1938 for details.
Chino Valley Funeral Home is caring for the family.
