Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Posted: Monday, September 10, 2012 - Leonard T. Howard, Sr., passed away in Reno, Nev. Sept. 1, 2012 at the age of 93. Len was amazingly vibrant, energetic, fun and active with family and friends. Len was born in Malden, Mo., Dec. 5, 1918 to Harry J. and Olive Howard. During World War II, he joined the Army and was a gunnery instructor. After his army service, he worked for the railroad and moved to Reno. Len obtained his college degree at the University of Nevada and received his law degree from the University of Denver, College of law in 1952. He practiced law in Reno until he retired in 1998. He was most proud of the work he did with the Reno Housing Authority over many decades. Len was a long time member of the Elks Lodge and the Kerak Shrine Temple and, in 1985, he was the potentate of the Kerak Shrine Temple. He loved golfing with the Kerak golf club. Len was passionate about his family and friends, golf, RV travel, card games, boating, tennis, the S.F. Giants and the 49ers. In the winter, he cherished his time with an extremely close group of friends in Lake Havasu City. His highlight each year was the annual summer family reunions where Len could enjoy the children. Len was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kate Howard; and four siblings: sisters, Olive Elizabeth Hunter, Mary Jo Wagner and Doretta Kaluna, and brother, Jay (Shirleen) Howard. He is survived by his children, Leonard T. Howard Jr., Craig (Patti) Howard, and Becky Sue (Glenn) Lubbe; step-daughter, Lynne (Alan) Volpi-Morris; grandchildren, Holly, Kelly, Jason, Erin, Jenna and Melanie and step-grandchildren, Michelle, Scherry and David; nieces and nephews and many great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be Friday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., at the Masonic Memorial Gardens Chapel, 437 Stoker Ave, adjacent to Mountain View Cemetery, Reno, Nev., with a reception following at the Kerak Shrine Temple, 4935 Energy Way, Reno, Nev. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Len’s memory may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Kerak Shrine Temple, 4935 Energy Way, Reno, NV 89502.
