Kathryn (Kathy) Coon Stahl died peacefully in her sleep on September 14, 2012 in Centennial, Colorado, following her husband’s passing six weeks before.
Born to Stanley and Martha Coon of Duncan, Arizona, Kathryn spent her first 80 years as a proud Arizonan. She met her husband, Charles Stahl at the University of Arizona, where she earned her bachelors degree. They were married for almost 61 years.
Kathy taught fourth grade for 25 years in Flagstaff Public Schools. She was proud of being a teacher and the role she played in children’s lives. Later, she returned to school to earn an M.A. in Elementary Education knowing it would make her a better teacher.
Kathy loved walking outdoors; Buffalo Park in Flagstaff was a favorite. She was an avid bird watcher who enjoyed the smell of Ponderosa Pines and would often stop to appreciate an autumn afternoon; the smells, the warm colors and the gentle rustle of the unending wind of her beloved home.
Kathy was joyful and quick to laugh. She was enthusiastic about cooking, friends, playing Bridge and throwing parties. She eagerly read history and current events. She frequently had several books started and voraciously read newspapers beginning to end.
Kathy believed in community and service and was highly involved in Flagstaff during her 50-year residency. She was active in Women’s Rotary, League of Women Voters, Alter Guild, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and the Museum of Northern Arizona. She was also dedicated to her extended family and deeply beloved.
She leaves behind a sister Nancy Ryan of Williamsburg, VA, children Stan (Beverly), Chris (Liz) and Karen Stahl, and grandchildren Bethany, Cameron and Erika Stahl.
Though she lived her last few years in Colorado, she greatly missed her Flagstaff community.
