Ellsworth Schnebly Dies; Son of Sedona's Founder
SEDONA - Services for Ellsworth M. Schnebly, 77, who died Wednesday in Marcus J. Lawrence Memorial Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wayside Chapel.
Burial will be in Sedona Memorial Park.
Mr. Schnebly moved to the Red Rock Country with his family at age 3. A year later, in 1902, his father Theodore Carleton Schnebly, became the first postmaster of what is now Sedona, named for Ellsworth's mother, Sedona M. Schnebly. The town's famed Schnebly Hill also bears the family name because of the part Carl Schnebly played in getting the first road started from Sedona to Flagstaff.
Elllsworth Schnebly, a veteran of both World Wars, was for 41 years involved with Airzona schools, as a teacher and as an administrator, starting in 1919 in a one-room school at chambers. He organized the first high school at Sanders and was later principal and teacher in schools at Parks, Mayer and Cottonwood.
He held BA and MA degrees from Colorado State College at Greeley, Colo., and an MS from Arizona State College at Flagstaff. In 1972, he was awarded the NAU alumni service award in recognition of his long career in education.
In Sedona, Mr. Schnebly held positions in many organizations, including the Sedona Westerners, the Oak Creek Camera Club, the Sedona-Coconino Taxpayers Association, the Sedona Branch of the American Association for retired Persons. He was helping to organize the Sedona Historical Association. He was a member of the congregation of the Wayside Chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his children, Lawrence, Mrs. Paula Hokanson, and Mrs. Patricia Ceballos; and a brother and two sisters and nine grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Sedona Home for Funerals.
