GREER,
James Barton (Jim)
The White Mountain Independent,
Show Low, Arizona ~ 10/02/2012
James Barton Greer, 92, resident of Pinetop for 30 years died Sept. 21, 2012, in Phoenix. He was born May 20, 1920 in Vancouver, Washington.
Jim was well loved by his family and friends. He was a gentlemen in every sense of the word. He was always a church going man and most recently was a member of Church of Our Saviour in Show Low.
As a child, Jim had the opportunity to live in many places including Alaska and Hawaii as his dad was in the Army. He graduated from San Jose State in 1942 with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Physics. After graduating, he went to work for Pan American Engineering in Berkley. It was World War II and Jim was soon drafted and joined the Navy. Before leaving for active duty, he met and married Dolly Toole. After serving in the Philippines, China, and Korea, he came home and took a job with the USDA as an inspector in a food processing plant.
Since he was interested and had trained in the Navy’s radio school, he next went to work for Bell Telephone as a lineman and later as an engineer. In 1976 he and his wife went to Iran to work with American Bell International training engineers until the fall of the Shah in 1979. He retired upon his return to the U.S. and lived in Mesa.
Jim and Dolly moved to Pinetop in the early ‘80s. Jim was involved in the local ham radio club, Lions Club, and enjoyed square dancing with his wife with the White Mountain Rim Rompers. He and Dolly also volunteered at Love Kitchen for many years.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dolly Toole Greer; two sons: Michael and Patrick; his five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Church of Our Saviour, 5147 Show Low Lake Road in Show Low.
