Black’s Show Low Mortuary, Show Low, Arizona Donald Wakehouse (August 27, 1931 - September 28, 2012) In Loving Memory Donald Lewis Wakehouse, 81, of Show Low, AZ passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012 at his home in Show Low, AZ. Don was born August 27, 1931 in Allen Township, Harison County, Iowa. He grew up on a farm between Woodbine and Pisgah, Iowa. He attended Country School for his first 8 years and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1950. Don farmed with his father and neighbor until he was drafted July 4, 1952. He attended artillery school in Fort Chaffee, ARK and was assigned to the “Triple Nickel” 555 Field Artillery Unit in Korea, during the Korean War. In November 1952, he married Louise and they were married almost 60 years. They lived most of their married life in Aurora, Colorado and the last 13 years in Show Low, AZ. Don could no longer farm, so he used his GI Bill to become an accountant. He was Treasurer for many organizations he belonged to: Mile High EX POW Chapter of Colorado State of Colorado EX-POW Colorado Classic Cars – Denver Area First Christian Church of Aurora National Treasurer of the American EX-POW Don retired from the Internal Revenue Service Don loved football. He held Denver Bronco season tickets for many years. When he moved to Arizona, giving up those tickets was the hardest thing. His hobby was restoring vintage gas pumps and old cars. Also Don liked to go fishing, loved to travel, an avid gardener and loved being outdoors. Don is survived by his wife, Louise; a daughter, Dawn Alcumbrac of Pinetop; grandsons Eric and Jake; his sister, Mary Cross; his brothers Leo and Jerry; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Don’s wishes are to be buried next to his mother and father in Iowa. Services will be held in Show Low on Thursday, October 04, 2012 at 4 p.m at the Methodist Church in Show Low. Also, services will be held in Missouri Valley, Iowa on Monday, October 08, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Little Sioux Christian Church in Little Sioux, Iowa.
