Brendlinger << >>April 25, 1923 — May 27, 2012 << Earl Junior Brendlinger, 89, passed away May 27, in West Hills, Calif. a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born in Sebring, Ohio to Lester and Erma Brendlinger, he grew up with brother, Donald and sisters, Kaye and Betty. Earl had a love of athletics and music, was a three-sport letterman for the Sebring High School Trojans in football, baseball, and basketball while playing tuba in the band. Educated at Ohio State, Kent State and the Cleveland School of Business, Earl’s college highlight was playing in a JV football game at Ohio State, changing into his band uniform at halftime and dotting the “i” with his tuba during the Ohio State spell-out, then rushing back to play the second half. Following his father’s lead, Earl enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and also played horn in their military band. Turning his love of sports into a 28-year career as a Recreation Director for the Veteran’s Administration starting in Dayton, Ohio, moved west to work at the West LA VA, then on to the Sepulveda VA. A loving father to Buddy and Timmy, their childhood was filled with many trips to the VA to play sports and watch movies as he showed movies to vets. He met his true love Gert on the golf course and married in Las Vegas on Dec. 1, 1974 and became an enthusiastic stepfather to Craig and Kenny. Upon retirement, they moved to Lake Havasu City becoming happy Arizonans for 26 years; camping, traveling and golfing while cheering on all of Arizona’s sports teams. They deeply loved Lake Havasu, their friends and neighbors and breakfast at “Rusty’s”. Earl left behind sons, Buddy and Timmy; stepsons, Craig and Kenny; grandchildren, Alina, Haley, Annie and Eric; daughters-in-law Jackie and Tina; and loving neighbors Judy and Tom Kirchner and Kathy and Jim Smith. A celebration of life service took place June 9, in West Hills, Calif., where family and friends honored his 89 years and a loving life well-lived. A tree dedication ceremony honoring Earl and Gert Brendlinger will be held at the Aquatic Center on Oct. 13, 2012.
