Hank Quien, 75, of Goodyear died Sept. 6, 2012, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Mr. Quien was born June 2, 1937, in Canton, S.D., to Andy and Ruby Strand.
He served two years in the army and was honorably discharged.
He purchased the farm currently known as Happy Hank's Furniture Barn in 1976 and opened for business in 1977. He retired in 1999 and moved to Arizona. He moved back to Sioux Falls in 2011.
He coached his children's youth basketball teams.
He began his umpiring career in 1967 and retired in 1980. During that time, he was the umpire-in-chief for five Slow Pitch Regional tournaments. In addition, he umped in the following national tournaments: 1974 Men's 16-inch in Marshalltown, Iowa, 1976 Men's 16-inch in Sioux Falls, S.D., and 1977 Men's Major 12-inch in Cleveland, Ohio.
From 1975 to 1980, he served as State Slow Pitch umpire-in-chief and started conducting clinics for umpires across the state, putting on at least 15 clinics each year. He also supported women's softball in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was inducted into the SDASA Hall of Fame in 1985.
He was also involved with Elk's Club, Sertoma and the American Legion.
He is survived by two daughters, Melanie Hayman and Marisa Quien; three sons, Michael Quien, Mitchell Quien and Darin Corcoran; and seven grandchildren.
Services were Sept. 11 in Harrisburg, S.D.
