1933 -2012
Bernice D. Wallace, beloved wife, mother and musician died from ovarian cancer at her home in Prescott AZ on October 19, 2012. She was a long time resident of Flagstaff.
Born March 8, 1933 in Newport KY, Bernice Deaton grew up and attended public schools in Vine Grove until she enrolled at Western Kentucky University. She worked for a time at Ft. Knox but having earned a teaching certificate she became an exceptional middle school teacher in Owensboro.
In 1958 she married Lt. Andrew Wallace at Ft. Knox and moved to Tucson AZ.
Next year they went to Chula Vista CA where she cared for their first child and Andrew taught one year at Coronado High School.
Back in Tucson 1960~1968 Bernice taught school, worked at several jobs, and raised two children. The family moved to Flagstaff where Andrew taught at Northern Arizona University and their third child was born. Bernice worked various jobs and was active in Girl and Boy Scouts, the choral society, NAU faculty wives, and in her church.
After her children left home, Bernice enjoyed retirement in Flagstaff but moved to Prescott in 1999. She sang in the Prescott Congregational Church choir, played in the bell choir, and managed the church memorial committee.
Bernice is survived by her husband and daughters Andrea Lewis of Cottonwood AZ and Mary Dragone of Boise ID and by son Robert Wallace of Bowling Green OH, as well as brother Charles Deaton and sister Freda Blair of Elizabethtown KY; and by grandchildren Julia Wadey, Andrew Lewis and Logan Lewis, and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held October 26 at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church of Prescott.
