Marshall Raymond Minter
(June 1, 1920 - October 22, 2012)
Marshall R. Minter Jr., 92, passed away Monday, the 22nd of October 2012 surrounded by loving family. He was born June 1, 1920 in Fowler, Indiana. In 1938 he graduated from Hammond High School in Indiana, then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana.
He was an Engineer and then executive of American Steel Foundry. Marshall also taught part time at Purdue University Extension before moving his family to Arizona in 1965 where he taught at Arizona State University in the department of Industrial Design and Technology.
Marshall earned a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Arizona. Marshall retired from ASU in 1982 and was honored as a Professor Emeritus. He met his long time best friend and companion, Mabry Szoke, while square dancing. Mabry and Marshall moved from the valley to White Mountain Lakes in 1993. Marshall was an avid traveler and a "life time learner", taking Elder Hostel classes in the US and other countries.
Marshall also took many trips with his 30+ year companion, Mabry, who preceded him in passing in 2010 here in the Show Low area. The two enjoyed square and round dancing all over the US as well as other countries. Marshall was a Captain in the Marines and served in WWII during the occupation of Japan and the Korean War, where he flew over enemy territory as an artillery spotter.
Marshall was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Reed, of Port Charlotte, Florida, his father Marshall R. Minter, Sr. of Highland, Indiana, and Mabry Szoke of the Show Low area.
Marshall leaves behind 2 daughters, Peggy Jo, from Portland, Oregon, and Debbie Imerson, from San Jose, California and her husband Rob. Marshall will also be missed by son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Jana Szoke, of Nutrioso, a granddaughter, Amber Rose Yates, of Portland, Oregon and 2 great grandsons: Robert Zeddicus Yates, 2, and Brandon Patrick Yates, 1 month old.
