Gilbert Canizales, age 79, of Mission Hill, Calif. passed away on Oct. 18, 2012. He was born June 4, 1933, the son of Jesus Canizales and Fidela Gonzales.
Originally from Globe, Ariz., he graduated from Miami High School and married Rojelia Alvarado in Miami, Ariz. in 1954. He worked as a laborer in the construction business. He retired in 2000 after 24 years of employment.
Gilbert served in the U.S. Army and was part of the 42nd Armored Division’s “Hell on Wheels” during the Post-Korean War era.
He worked as a construction supervisor in the Globe, Winslow and Prescott areas. He owned the Club Verde Bar in the late 1960s. He relocated to the San Fernando area in 1971 and became an avid fan of the Dodgers and Lakers. Most importantly he loved his family and all his grandchildren. He stayed in California, where he raised his children, but his heart was always in Miami.
Gilbert was a devoted Catholic and a member of the Local 300 Laborers Union.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Rojelia; children, Terrie Chavez (Carlos), Gilbert Canizales (Linda), Michelle Canizales (Mickey Cabrera), Mary Lou Munoz (David), Michael Canizales (Candi); grandchildren, Pauline Hernandez (Jose), Aaron Canizales (Jeana), Salina Canizales, Gilbert Canizales III, Angela Munoz, Brian Chavez (Christie), Christina Chavez, Melissa Munoz, Olivia Chavez, Michaela Canizales, Andrew Canizales; great-grandchildren, Kiana Hernandez, Sarina Munoz, Maria Canizales, Neyah Hernandez, Jadyn Ryan, Julius Hernandez, Gabriella Canizales, Liani Bajoie, Savannah Canizales, Brooklyn Daniels, Natalia Apperson, and Xander Hernandez; brothers and sisters, Belia Gaona, Pauline Fernandez (Benny), Betty Valencia (Gilley), and Arthur Canizales (Espie); and sisters-in-law Janie Rodriguez, and Trini Vasquez.
He is preceded in death by sisters, Margie Garcia and Esther Monteverde; brother, Raul Canizales; and brothers-in-law, Frank Alvarado, George Alvarado, Robert Alvarado, Memo Alvarado, and Joe Alvarado.
Services were held in San Fernando, Calif. Interment was at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
