Socorro R. “Cora” Oviedo, age 78, of Miami, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Sept. 10, 1934, in Colonia Dublan, Mexico, the daughter of Eulalia (Rodriguez) and Lucas Bowman-Soleil.
She was a longtime resident of Miami and a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. She moved to Miami at the age of 12, with her mother and sisters. In Miami she attended school and met her future husband Genaro C. Oviedo and together they raised three children, Alfred, Denise and Gina.
Cora worked as a dietary aide at Miami Inspirational Hospital for more than 20 years. She was a competitive gambler at the casino and when it came to home games, she hardly ever let anyone win and to beat her was a feat.
She made clothes for herself and her daughters. She was unsurpassed as an artisan when it came to making quilts and ceramics. Cora loved cooking, but there were many other pleasures in life that made her happy, especially when it came to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Genaro C. Oviedo on June 26, 1997.
Cora leaves behind in loving memory one son Alfred Oviedo and his wife, Anne of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Denise and her partner Dale Roper of Mesa and Gina Oviedo and her partner, Paul Cox of Miami; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Ariel and Emily.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 844 W. Sullivan Street, Miami, Ariz.
