John F. Poppie, 76, of Litchfield Park died Oct. 30, 2012, of cancer in Litchfield Park.
Mr. Poppie was born March 3, 1936, in San Francisco. He moved to Arizona in 2002.
He attended school in Redwood City, Calif., and graduated from a S.F. Naval Shipyard welder apprenticeship in 1956. He was a welder at a naval shipyard in Alameda, Calif. In 1957, he started as a patrol officer with the San Mateo County Sheriff's office. He was promoted to sergeant and detective.
In 1969, he moved to Lake County, Calif., and became a business owner with his wife, Mary. Their businesses included a sporting goods store, gas station and motel. He also spent two summers commercial fishing on his boat in Ft. Bragg, Calif. He retired in 2002 and moved to Arizona.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Poppie; four daughters, Sandra Poppie, Kathryn Riesland of Lakeport, Calif., Linda Byrd and Susan Plaumann; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be at 10 a.m. with a service at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at Menke Funeral Home, 12420 N. 103rd Ave. in Sun City.
