Jean Matlock passed peacefully Sunday morning, Nov. 4, 2012. One of 11 children, she was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Alabama.
Soon after graduating high school in Arkansas, she married Walter Lee Matlock and they took the train west to Arizona. There they settled in Phoenix and raised their three children, Marilynn, Steve and Bruce.
They grew to love the blue skies, warm weather, desert lakes and mountains of Arizona. Always ready for an adventure, Jean was passionate about fishing. She loved to spend time outdoors with her family and friends.
Jean was an entrepreneur before that term became popular. An accomplished seamstress, she managed her own drapery shop for many years. On her sewing table at home you could find projects as varied as a wedding dress or a motorcycle seat. An avid sportswoman, Grandma Jean relished attending her children's and her grandchildren's many sporting events.
She was a mother to many, always positive, always kind, always grateful. Jean demonstrated her strong Christian faith and values by sharing her warmth, her love, her home and her food with everyone around her.
Preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter, Jean is survived by her three children, Marilynn, Steve and Bruce; five grandchildren, Walter, Katie, Jesse, Sierra and Sasha; as well as two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Hayden.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests a donation to the Margaret T. Morris Center, where Jean spent her last years.
At Jean's request, final services will be private by her family.
Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family.
