NEWELL, Gene Gernard


Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Posted: Friday, November 16, 2012 - Gene Gernard Newell, a resident of Lake Havasu City for the past 20 years, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. He was 85 years old. Gene was born Sept. 11, 1927 in Neligh, Neb. He graduated high school at Neligh High then joined the Coast Guard and sailed the Great Lakes. Among his occupations was a high power lineman for Nebraska Public Power, a serviceman for Doall metal cutting machines in Los Angeles, a truck driver in Santa Maria, Calif. then moving back to Nebraska becoming an owner/operator truck driver. After retiring and moving to Lake Havasu City, Gene bought a pontoon boat and loved to go fishing. He then joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary helping fellow boaters. Gene also became a volunteer Mohave County Sheriff’s Boating Safety Officer. He became bored with retirement and went back to trucking for IWX in Kingman where he hauled loads to and from California and the Midwest states. Unfortunately, he developed diabetes and had to quit trucking at age 77. Gene loved his family, fishing and trucking. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; his daughter, Gerry Bailey and her husband James, of Dakota City, Nev., his son, Alan Newell and wife Debbie of Lake Havasu City; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by us all.
