The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Monday, November 19, 2012 Joy Hanson Smith, formerly of Prescott, Ariz., passed on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in Virginia with her family. She was born on June 23, 1925, in Teaneck, N.J., the daughter of Henry Albert and Lucille Hanson. Following graduation from Teaneck High School, she attended and graduated from Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Va. Upon her return to New York City, she met and married 1st Lt. Joseph Steele Smith (U.S. Army) in 1948. They resided in Maryland for the next 34 years, raising three sons and one daughter. During that time, Joy was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Group, while working for Kelly Services, the Westinghouse Underseas Plant, then became manager for Kelly Services in Severna Park, Md. In 1986, Joy and her husband Joe moved to beautiful Prescott, Ariz., to enjoy their retirement. Joy volunteered her services to Hospice, and the Yavapai Regional Medical Center Gift Shop, as well as related fundraisers. She loved her friends, gardening, bridge and travel. Joy was predeceased in 2001 by husband Joe and left Prescott in 2008, to live with her daughter and family in Purcellville, Va., and to be near her sons. Joy had a joy for life. She touched many and will be greatly missed by all. She is survived by sons Joseph, Daniel and Matthew; daughter Tracy; grandchildren Justice, Lucas, Ryan, Luke, Shannon, Peter, Tyler, Kellie, Jarod; and eight great-grandchildren. Joy will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with her late husband Lt. Col. Joseph Steele Smith, Ret.
