On December 5th, 2012, William “Vernon” Morton moved on to his heavenly home after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, he was 83.
Vernon was born June 20th, 1929, in Elk City, Oklahoma. After graduating from Canute High School class of 1948 in Canute, OK, he married the love of his life Dorothy Jean Waits on December 16th, 1949; they were blessed to be partners in life and love for 63 wonderful years. Vernon served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic.
Vernon and Dorothy resided in Flagstaff Arizona from 1955 through 1984 where they raised two daughters, Vernita and Tammi. For 18 years Vernon worked as an automotive mechanic for Babbitt Ford before opening his own shop, Morton’s Auto Repair where he had the reputation as the guy who would help anyone and the man you could trust. After retiring in 1984 the Mortons moved to Black Canyon City and spent their retirement years helping to build or remodel over twenty churches with the volunteer organization Arizona Baptist Builders.
Vernon was preceded in death by his daughter Vernita, his brother Fred, and sisters Clorine and Melba. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Tammi (Mike) and grandson James.
A celebration of life memorial service will be at the Community Church, Black Canyon City on January 3rd, 2013 at 1:00 pm.
