CAMPBELL, William E. (Bill)

William E. Campbell (Bill) passed away peacefully on April 3, 2004, at his home. Bill was born July 31, 1925 in Morton, Washington a small logging town at the foot of Mt. Ranier. This triggered a lifelong love of the outdoors. In 1943 he moved to Phoenix to join his family who had moved earlier. He graduated from the U of Arizona in Electrical Engineering where he was a member of the engineering honor society. He tried to enlist in the Army but was rejected for being too skinny. After college he was drafted (not too skinny this time) and had the interesting fortune to work sometimes with the German scientists brought to this country after the war. When he got out, he went to work briefly for General Electric and then joined the predecessor to APS which became APS and from which he retired after 38 years. Bill suffered a massive heart attack in 1988 and dealt with serious heart disease with admirable dignity and tenaciousness from then on. He was a Loving husband (39 1/2 years), father and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Nancy, and sons, Chris (Lisa, Cassidy, Katie) and Ian (Paige, Derek, Nicholas). Though his health exhausted him, the grandchildren were a great joy. Bill gave his love of the outdoors to Chris and Ian, as they shared many hunting and fishing trips. Family favorites were camping and skiing trips. For 20 years or so, he was the patrol leader of the volunteer Ski Patrol at the Arizona Ski Bowl until they started hiring paid patrollers. A special joy for Bill was being a member of the 1960 Olympic Ski Patrol at Squaw Valley. Services were at the Church of the Beatitudes, 555 W. Glendale, Phoenix, on April 8, 2004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Special Olympics of Arizona, 3816 N. 7th St., Phoenix, 85014 or Westside Food Bank, P. 0. Box 1310, Sun City, 85372, Attn: Betty. The family is so appreciative of the love and support of so many over the years - we love you! The Arizona Republic on 4/6/2004.
