Helen Taggart of Phoenix passed away in her home on April 2, 2004 following a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.
Helen was born in Helvetia, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1914.
Her family settled in Akron, Ohio in 1931. Helen left school early to help her family by working at various jobs including Akron Selle, a metal stamping factory, where she participated in union organizing activities. In the late 1950's Helen and her mother relocated to Phoenix.
In 1969 Helen married Sam Taggart and moved to Anchorage, Alaska. After Sam's death in a plane crash, Helen split her time between Phoenix and Anchorage where she worked at a jewelry shop.
Helen will always be remembered for the loving care of her mother and several family members during their terminal illnesses, as well as the assistance provided her niece in helping to care for her premature son, Aaron. Helen was an excellent seamstress who took great pride in creating beautiful clothing for family, friends and charitable groups. She also found much enjoyment in her artwork and craft activities.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Sam, parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth Kozma, and sisters, Ethel Kozma, Elizabeth Konopka and Mary Capra. She is survived by her two brothers, John Kozma and Nick Kozma, both of Akron, Ohio. She is also survived by nieces, Shari Capra of Phoenix and Judy Capra of New York City, as well as many other nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her companion and caregiver of six years, Josefina Besana.
A Mass of Christian burial was on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix. The family will welcome friends at a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. At Helen's wishes, cremation will follow and her ashes will be returned to Akron to be placed in her mother's graveside. A memorial service will be held in Akron at a later date.
