SHERGALIS,
Daniel
Daniel Shergalis died April 10, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 58.
Danny was born Feb. 22, 1946, in New York City.
After graduating from Brooklyn Tech High School in 1964, he attended Brooklyn College and earned a degree in anthropology in 1968. His adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity inspired him to travel the world to exotic locales throughout Asia, Africa, South & Central America and Europe. Among his many exciting adventures, he lived and worked for awhile in Australia.
He met his wife, Kathleen Stemple, in 1973 in Tempe and they married Oct. 28, 1978. During their 30-year love affair, Danny and Kathie traveled extensively throughout the world, learning about many cultures and making friends along the way despite language differences.
Danny was a data-processing supervisor at Valley National Bank in Phoenix for 15 years, after which he decided to change careers, went back to school, and earned a nursing degree. For the past nine years, he was a registered nurse at Chandler Regional Hospital and was fortunate to work with many generous and wonderful people who provided him with much support throughout his illness. Danny loved history, stamp and coin-collecting, books and film.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Julia Shergalis. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen; his brothers Thomas (Emily) Shergalis of Queens, New York, and Edward (Antonia) Shergalis of Darien, Connecticut; his nephews Thomas Shergalis and Ted Shergalis, both of New York; nieces Katharine Shergalis Ewald of Connecticut and Margaret Shergalis of New York; sister-in-law Meg (Tim) Masters of Tempe and their children Matthew and Scott.
Danny's wry sense of humor and adventurous spirit will be sorely missed by his family and many loving friends. Services will be held Saturday, May 1, at the home of George Maracas, Phoenix 85048. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Valley will be appreciated.
