GOODE, James Journey


James Journey Goode, a resident of Cortez, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona, passed on peacefully at his Cortez home on March 28, 2004 at the age of 74. He was born in Silome Springs, Arkansas on July 8, 1929, to Velma Journey and John Ward Goode. The 5th of nine children. He mined uranium across the Colorado Plateau during the 1950's and 60's and was owner-operator of "Blasting & Mining, Inc." and "Haycamp Gravel" in Cortez until his retirement in 1991. Jim was an avid Thoroughbred horse racing fan. Throughout the years, he owned several horses that raced at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. He formed many treasured friendships on the "Back Stretch" which was his favorite place to be, about daylight, each morning. In the afternoons he could be found in the clubhouse with his friends, trying to pick a winner. Jim was a member of the Episcopal Church, Cortez Elks Lodge, Cortez Men's Golf Association and HBPA Horsemen's Association of Phoenix. He leaves to mourn his passing, wife of 53 years, Lenore, daughter Joy Harris, Tigard, Oregon, sons Ken and Joanne Goode, Cortez, Colorado, Bill and Kay Goode, Cortez, Colorado. Grandchildren, Jonathan Harris of Corvallis, Oregon, Journey Goode of Fort Collins, Colorado and Callie and Billy Goode of Cortez, Colorado. Five sisters, two brothers, many loving nieces and nephews and a host of devoted friends. Preceding him in death were his beloved son, Kelvin Ward Goode, mother and father Velma and John Goode, sister Irma Nell Sexon and nephew Michael Nelson. Cremation has taken place.
