STEWART, Afton

Afton Bingham Stewart passed on Monday, April 5, 2004 at 4pm. Daughter of Lester and Mae Bingham of Vernal, Utah, she was born March 25, 1912, the oldest of four children. As a child she was active in 4-H where at the age of twelve she took her prize heifer Guernsey to Chicago and won a blue ribbon for her hard work. Afton went to USU in Logan, Utah where she met Earnest I. Stewart, Jr. Afton was past president of Chi Omega Sorority and Earnest was a Sigma Chi. Afton and Earnest married June 6, 1935 in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. They had two daughters Sally and Susan. Afton is survived by her daughter Susan K. Hansen, her son-in-law H. Kent Hansen, granddaughter Kristen Sue Hansen and grandson Stewart Kent Hansen. Afton and Earnest went to graduate school at MIT in Boston and Columbia University in NYC. Afton, among other honors was principle of Ethical Culture on West End Avenue in NYC and taught University classes at Teacher's College. Grace Langdon was her Mentor. The family moved to Scottsdale in 1959 where Afton was a Reading Specialist in the Scottsdale School District. She touched many people in her teaching career. Afton retired in 1973 and was able to spend more time at her beloved ranch in Idaho. Afton will be laid to rest in Logan, Utah on April 10th, 2004. A Memorial in Scottsdale will be announced in the future to honor a lovely and talented lady...Sweet Afton... We love you. Published in the Arizona Republic on 4/10/2004.
