Marilyn Sue Simmons-Kessinger, 72, was called home Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 while surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Murphysboro, Ill. Feb. 16, 1940 to Dallas Eugene Barnett and Mable Marie Stearns. She was raised in Ziegler, Ill. by Dallas and Marcelle Snider-Barnett — her “Momma and Daddy.” She was married to the late Charles Adelbert Simmons until his death in 1999. Her “Momma” Marcelle Barnett survives.
She subsequently married Jimmy Vondell Kessinger in 2007 and they chose Lake Havasu City as their home. Sue enjoyed the many activities in Lake Havasu but most importantly the many friends who became a part of her extended family.
Sue joined the Marine Corp League Auxiliary in 2007. She served as their DAV Chairperson in 2009 and was elected President of the Auxiliary in 2010. Later she had to step down from that position due to health issues, but felt blessed that the Auxiliary members were always there for her, whatever her needs.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy; her Momma, Marcelle; her two children, daughter, Tamara (Darryl) Minton and son, Tod Simmons; five grandchildren and one great-grandson, Mavrick; step-son, Kevin (Carolyn) Kessinger; step-daughters, Karen (Don) Aaeschliman; Kristin (Charles) Garland; step-son, James Kessinger, step-daughters, Paula (Erick) Dusky, Mary Dudley, Elizabeth Kessinger, Katie Kessinger and step-son, Stewart Kessinger. One step-son-in-law, T.J. Dudley, KIA on July 7, 2011 in Afghanistan, was so very special to her.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles and her infant son, Timothy Scott.
Services took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Las Vegas on Dec. 22, with gravesite services Dec. 26 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
A memorial service to honor Sue will be on Jan. 5, 2 p.m., at the Elks Lodge #2399, 3532 McCulloch Blvd
