Owens Livingston Mortuary, Show Low, Arizona Herschell Eugene Jewell, Jr. January 14, 1936 - January 13, 2013 Herschell Eugene Jewell, Jr. died in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Tall Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Show Low, Navajo County, Arizona following a lengthy illness, just one day shy of his 77th birthday. Herschell was born on January 14, 1936 in Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona to his parents, the late Herschell Eugene, Sr. and Evelyn (Pointer) Jewell. The Arizona native married his wife, the former Helen Jean Nelson, on January 9, 1980. Only four days before he died, the couple celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary together. Herschell had an incredible work ethic throughout his life. He was a self-motivated and driven man who worked hard to provide for his family. Moving from Phoenix, he and his wife, Jean, were able to retire to the White Mountains 14 years ago. He loved living in the mountains and appreciated the quiet peace that life had to offer here. Herschell was known as a "jack-of-all-trades" as he could do just about anything placed before him. His aunt even considered him to be an excellent house painter and was looking forward to him coming back to paint her home again. After he retired from his long-haul trucking company, Herschell began another job working as a gateman at the Pinetop Country Club. In his younger years, Herschell loved to go fishing. In more recent years, he enjoyed "going" fishing with his wife and enjoyed relaxing in his tuck, "knocking one back", while she "did all the work..." During his alone time, he enjoyed passing time by playing solitaire. He was a good man and will dearly be missed by his family and friends. Herschell is survived by his wife, H. Jean Jewell of Lakeside, Arizona; 2 step-children: Sharon (Jay) Hammond of Phoenix, Arizona, Janice (Rick) Schunn of Phoenix, Arizona; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and his also survived by his aunt, Laverne Shanks of Lakeside, Arizona.
